when i run avs all i get is a black screen does anyone know why this might happen?

Sorry, but you need to formulate your problem more clearly and give more details about your computer hardware and software (operating system).

The problem might be, that you have old version of AVS. Dl the newest version and try again.

It's possible you do not have an AVS file loaded- called a preset- (although, a fresh install of AVS has a preset preloaded). Double clicking on the black screen should open a window, and use the menu in the window to load a preset. It uses the windows open file interface, so that's nothing new.
