RIP Winamp

thanks to onionring for pointing me to this article

The Verge is about technology and how it makes us feel. Founded in 2011, we offer our audience everything from breaking news to reviews to award-winning features and investigations, on our site, in video, and in podcasts.

to be honest, i'm not even shocked at all. i remember winamp as my long-time favourite player, but that was also a long time ago. in the end, it became just a tool for me to play visuals, but my primary audioplayer had been something else for a long time (these days i mostly listen to spotify).

my real concern is the forums, what will happen to it? it's such a great resource outside the winamp discussion, it would be a great loss.

edit: now that there's an announcement on the winamp page, it's clear that the forums will be gone as well. it would be nice if some forum admin would give us access to all the posts of the avs forum, but the move to announce the winamp a month before the shutdown makes me doubt it will happen. great move, aol!

That makes the both of us, I've known winamp for almost a decade and started using it like 6 or so years ago. I guess this was just a matter of time before this happened, first with AVS, then Winamp.

DrO will there be a possibility to import a Backup from this Forum in the winampforum.com or is all the resources lost?
DrO#
well from what i've heard, a number of people are scraping the forums and everything else but as far as importing things go, i'd expect it'll have to be a manual process but i really don't know.

I'll only miss the forums, as i've explained on my journal.

Good run WinAmp. Good job Nullsoft. Sleep now, earned it you have. [/yoda]

working on version 2.0 as we speak, featuring proper blockquotes, codes and links. running some more tests before uploading it to the same address

Working how? I thought you were just gonna archive the forums and that you have done already. Im confused 🧟

new version here. unlike in the previous version, you can click links. also blockquotes (and code blocks) are indicated, that was a bit confusing in the previous version.

Eh... a hi and bye from me. Said everything else on the Classic Skins board.

AVS and you guys meant a lot to me once and still do in some ways. Thank you for tolerating an overenthusiastic, sometimes misguided, sometimes annoying, but always well meaning kid.

By the way, if you're interested, there's another forum which will take over this one when the time comes, click here

fugly. wondering if they'll run into legal trouble with using the name.

personally, i'm only interested where the all the webvs discussion is going to. my suggestion would be to keep it on github.

i've explained things to death about the current naming and 'legal' aspects about the alternate forum (is easily found in my posting history).

I don't see how/where github provides actual discussion support. You can't/shouldn't use bugs for everything.

Thanks to Nullsoft, and thanks to all AVSers.

I've been playing with AVS for 12 years now. It inspired me to get into programming / math / generative art, and to eventually pursue a career in computer science / game development.

Hopefully DeviantART and Customize.org will keep their AVS categories up.

I plan to continue using Winamp. I've perfected the configs over the years, and it has been pretty much bug-free for me, for years. And I have not seen anything even close to AVS in other players though.

📻 Cheers

1001skins - now supports many of these solutions as well. Users can now upload skins, templates, plugins, etc and more...

i'm logging in from times long gone. i've been through an awful lot of life since i did my stint in the avs community, but i look back really fondly on it and i'm sad to see the llamas finally laid to rest.
Warrior of the Light#
NDD: nice to see you. In case you missed it, AOL sold winamp and shoutcast to Radionomy so the llama lives on. AVS on the other hand hasn't been alive at all in the past months (or year(s) depending on your definition of alive)
