Close main avs viz window while in overlay mode

Is there any way, while having the visualization playing in the desktop (overlay mode), to close the main avs visualization window without turning off the vizualization?

no. you can minimize winamp to the notification area ("systray") or move the avs out the visible desktop area by editing winamp.ini

But then I could not acces the avs editor.

ahh, I wish for a small patch that can give an extra checkbox to do this..

the overlay mode depends on the avs window, it's just a stretched "copy" of the same image. you either have to move the avs window away (this can become very unhandy) or might want to dock the avs into the editor. the latter will mean that the output quality of the overlay decreases, as the dock-mode is usually rather small.
