undernet uses the same protocol as quakenet or efnet. i found efnet quite stable during the last 4 years, so in the end its a question of personal taste.

for sure is that quakenet and efnet are the two biggest (=most popular) irc-networks, so for me anything else is out of question: i am not interested in connecting to 20 different irc-networks (+silcnet, where i'm also hanging around).
