About the AVS...
I'm not really a winamp newbie, but until recently, I never did much more with it than stick a cd in the disc drive and let the computer do the rest. Anyways, about the AVS, what is it? Does it come with :winamp: v.2.78, or is it a downloadable plugin? How do I open it? The answers are probably obvious, but I'm stupid.

AVS is a great visualization plugin. There are tons of presets out for it. In order to have AVS you must download either the full or standard version of winamp. It doesn't come with the lite version of winamp.
To use avs:
Winamp Preferences (CTRL + P)
Under the left column choose "visualization"
select "Advanced Visualization Studio v2.5 [vis_avs.dll]"
hit the start button
