another message to the reviewers
when i'm browsing the plugins section on this site, i often come across comments, complaining about the number of presets in a release. i think it's time to face the fact, that with all the new possibilities, avs has become more complex. the times of 50 presets per pack are over, except for noob stuff maybe.

for my own pack, i made 16 presets in 13 months and i hear similiar from others. during the process of creation, i took some presets out of the selection, cause they didn't appear to be "modern" anymore. what i'm trying to say with this is, that the reviewers should get used to smaller releases (10-25 presets?) and consider what i said before, when rating packs.

22nd December 2004 15:55 UTC

totally agreed. i never released a pack with more than 20 presets :)

22nd December 2004 17:19 UTC

I say 20 is a good amount of presets, 15 if tech-heavy, but 10 is too small; To me, that'd be a minipack for sure no matter what it contains

23rd December 2004 02:37 UTC

Okay then, Mabye I should stop working on my 35 preset pack which was going to be 50... and its not noob stuff. thats 50 not counting remixes too.....

23rd December 2004 03:33 UTC

Wait a minute..... I had 2 folders for my 2nd pack, no wonder It seemed like I'd done more. I have 85 originals!!!!!! 85!!! I really need to cut some out.....

23rd December 2004 09:18 UTC

use the "edit" button ... http://forums.winamp.com/images/edit.gif
i was taught this along time ago ;)

23rd December 2004 23:08 UTC

Well I'm New ok! And now I've revised it down to 65.. and that was incredibly hard....
mabye I could do 100 presets!!!

24th December 2004 05:48 UTC

To me a bloated pack of more than 30 presets has a distinct odour of noobism.

24th December 2004 06:33 UTC

lol, ssc here, umm water effect... DONE :D

25th December 2004 00:46 UTC

I've used water in......... *counts*....... 4

25th December 2004 00:48 UTC

I'll just go and delete your tribute then Pak-9....

26th December 2004 00:08 UTC

If you think it sucks enough to be deleted on a whim, then it mustn't be a good preset anyway.

Re: another message to the reviewers
This is just my opinion.

If the pack has 10 or less presets then it's small. It really should be considered a minipack (especially if there are 6 or less presets) and say so clearly in the pack name (but that's just my
opinion). If they're clearly noob presets, I complain, and explain that the pack size should be bigger (and why).

11-20 - a medium sized pack. Won't complain much about the size usually (I might if the variety of presets is small)

21-30 - a big pack. I'll never complain about the size. Again, I might if the variety is too small, but that's extremely har to achieve when there are that many presets.

31+ - a huge pack. If the quality of the presets is high, it'll get higher grades for the effort. If it's low (aka. noob-puts-everything-he-ever-made). Then it's considered bloated and might get lower grades.

Remix packs are a different sort (it the author clearly states that they are remix packs). If those are all remixes of one preset, it should be considered a minipack even if there are 15 of them because of the lack of variety. However, if the variety is high (and it usually is), it counts as a normal pack.

Oh, and sorry I couldn't reply earlier. I was away from the net for more than a month, came back a couple of days ago, and opened this board just today.

And why is it that you never hear someone say thank you to the reviewers. All we get is either bitching or idiotic sarcasm, or if we're lucky (this example) constructive criticism. I mean, I just reviewed more than 20 skins and around 10 packs to clear out the queue. That's extremely hard mental work you know.

My head still hurts from yesterday's khm... celebration, so this might not be exactly what I mean. I'll revise it once my head clears up.

Absolutely agree.

And dawg... if you dont like reviewing for wa.com, you can giiiit oaaaut

26th December 2004 12:59 UTC

Umm.... if I didn't like reviewing for wa.com, I wouldn't decide to become and avs reviewer in the first place, or I would refuse to become a skins reviewer or I would quit because of the extremely unfriendly database, or I wouldn't bother to write posts like the one above your and posts like that one I wrote in the past.

And the "complaining" part was with a big "sarc" around it. "cyn" even. Blah. I should start using smilies again.

And I know you were kidding.

26th December 2004 16:08 UTC

gee...i've not released a pack for a loooooooong time now:rolleyes: but i guess its good for all of you to remain far from my shitty presets :p

28th December 2004 01:01 UTC

what if its a really awesome remixed pack?

28th December 2004 03:36 UTC

um.......remixed pack?
i was hoping if you all wanted some originals:rolleyes:.......

28th December 2004 06:36 UTC

Please forgive MaTTFURY as he knows not what he's saying... he never does.

28th December 2004 13:26 UTC

heh i know bout Mattfury.....

i think we're getting a bit too offtopic here, For me a 15-20 preset pack would be decent enough. I'm thinking bout releasing a pack with 15 presets in a few weeks......will that be enough?

28th December 2004 13:37 UTC

You do that. And don't forget to publish it here.

28th December 2004 13:58 UTC

sure. let me get finished with it first. Its really hard to make presets after such a long time.

thanks for not reading my post.

Umm.... I read your post, then I read it again. I understand you perfectly. Well, at least I think I understood you perfectly. Please be more specific on what you think I didn't get. For me, a pack of 10/less presets IS small no matter the quality. However, if the presets are good/great, and it's obvious that some effort was put into them, I won't complain. I know that it's VERY hard to make a lot of complex presets, and the pack's quality not quanitity will count. However, if it's full of dot fountain + water presets, it will get lower rating than the average quality of the presets would get it. It's logical. I guess. That is (at least mine) our way of getting used to the smaller number of presets in a pack due to the reasons you stated. Before, when people did quality packs (for their own time) with 20+ presets regularly, I would've complained. Now I don't.

I probably won't see your answer because I might be experiencing some technical difficulties with my internet connection soon, which could result in my prolonged absence from the net. I'll try to sort some things out before that. Clearing the queue is my priority right now.

8th January 2005 22:39 UTC

i think that point of view is kinda old-fashioned. you'd know what i speak of, if you still did avs :p

9th January 2005 15:25 UTC

so......will a pack of 15 presets be cool? i'm talking of my presets( not very tech heavy....not very n00bish either:) )

9th January 2005 16:41 UTC

This seems like another one of those preset police posts, no one is forcing you to make big or small packs, there is no minumim size requirement, the reviewers opinion is just that, an opinion.

10th January 2005 11:19 UTC

i did'nt say that i felt 'forced' by any means :p i just asked whether a pack of 15 presets will be 'cool'?
