AVS will not be ditched, but it will probably not be developed further aside from bug fixes.
The source code won't be relased, as it will cause compatibility problems with many different versions flying around (just like how most software isn't compatible across Linux distros without seperate compiles).
Also, keep in mind that the AVS code is very mature, and it is doubtful that somebody who has never seen it before can do much to improve it.

AVS is (c) nullsoft, but everyone who developed on it has left. It's unlikely there will be updates. AVS is not going to be open-sourced because AVS is a valuable asset to Winamp, and the competition between media players is fierce.
However, maybe in the future the community might make a vis. I have some code lying around that I might pick up after my exams in January ;).
I agree about Jaak's skills though. The skills shown off in Jaak's third pack is just crazy.

I would seriously consider e-mailing AOL/Winamp developers with your queries about AVS, they may be happy to persue development with a third party or otherwise. Provided you give them a reason, the community, benefits to their product etc.. they will have a reason to listen to you.
Anything posted here is speculation and discussion, and therefore will get you no closer to 'saving' AVS.
